I took up cycling after the death of my beloved husband of 46 yrs. I was at my lowest at that time. I lost my confidence and couldn’t face new situations. I experienced loneliness and was very emotional. My daughter encouraged me by coming with me on her dad’s bike. On one of our rides we came across a Preston Pedals Dr Bike workshop in the park. Franc was demonstrating how to maintain your bike, he was busy and had a crowd around him so suggested I join a learn to fix workshops at the local church hall. He was so patient and knowledgeable, he showed me the M check for my bike, and explained how important that was to do prior to a ride. He showed how to change an inner tube if I get a puncture – I would never have known how to do that!

I joined the Preston Pedals social rides from the advert on Facebook. I was made to feel so welcome by Joanne, she put me at ease straightaway. She explained the route and I found it helpful that she chatted to me while riding alongside me. She noticed that my seat was too low, which she said could affect my knees and she readjusted the seat for me. I found chatting with the group was good for my mental well-being to interact with other people and It felt good that I’d tried something new. My confidence grew and I wasn’t as nervous about the traffic and stopped riding too near the pavement as before.

I started cycling to work instead of using the car, as well as shopping and going out regularly I enjoyed it so much. I just loved the feeling of fresh air on my face and listening to the birds. I would never have thought of going shopping on my bike before but now I combine a ride with a shopping trip. Fantastic! Regular riding has improved my stamina. I can tackle hills easier now and don’t have to get off and walk (not so often anyway!). Joining Preston Pedals has helped to get me through this sad time in my life by meeting new people, exercise ,support and talking. I am a much happier person.
