Developing a cycling community

Preston Pedals began in 2022 as a Climate Action Preston project, aspiring to make a positive difference to our environment by enabling more people to cycle in Preston. With a 'Together for the Planet' grant we offered bike repair sessions in the community, refurbished donated bikes and saved them from landfill, and captured cycling stories from Preston on film. Since then with funding from Preston City Council, Lancashire County Council and Cycling UK, we have refurbished many more bikes, offer a range of led rides including e-bike rides, and have set up a buddy scheme to support people to commute by bicycle. At the end of 2025, Preston Pedals Ltd became a Preston Pedals co-operative community interest company, a non-profit with both business and social objectives. We crowdfunded for a base and in Spring 2026 moved into the Cycle Hub.

Aims

Our aims are to encourage more people to cycle in Preston, especially those everyday short journeys to improve health and wellbeing and our environment; to have a positive impact on the local community through improving access to cycling; and to recycle and re-use resources.

Ethos

As a cooperative, we put our members and our community at the centre of everything we do. Our decisions are guided by collaboration, transparency, and mutual care. We value people over profit, choosing to grow in ways that strengthen community resilience, amplify local voices, and that help create meaningful, lasting change.

Why Cycle?

More people cycling confidently improves individual health and wellbeing and addresses financial challenges facing many people. Cycling also improves our community, helps reduce emissions from vehicles and enhance our environment, creating more pleasant places for us all to live.
